Indo-Pacific: scattered colonies along the coast of Queensland, the Frankland Group off north Queensland, Western Australia, and New Guinea; Indonesia and the Philippines, and very seldom along the Chinese coast. Recently reported from Tonga (Ref. 53797). |
Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 28-30; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 19-21. Description: Juveniles with white-edged ocelli in dorsal fin that reduces to a black spot in adults (Ref. 48636). Snout length 3.0-3.8 in HL. Body depth 1.3-1.5 in SL (Ref. 90102). |
Found in coastal to outer reef drop-offs with rich invertebrate growth to 60 m depth; may also occur in areas with sparse coral growth. Feed on sponges (Ref. 9710). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Form pairs during breeding (Ref. 205). |
