Distribution:  Northwest Pacific: probably endemic to Japan.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 134; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 100. Head very large and cavernous. Scales absent from head and bases of dorsal and anal fins. Pore bearing skin flap over operculum. Attains 40 cm SL.
Biology:  Rare species (Ref. 559).
