Family:  Opisthoproctidae (Barreleyes or spookfishes)
Max. size:  24.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 960 - 1200 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: off the Gulf of Guinea and South Africa. Western Atlantic: Bermuda. Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Southwest Pacific: New Zealand (Ref. 5755).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal soft rays: 10-11; Vertebrae: 58-58. Body slender. Elongated pectoral fin, 5 luminous (?) bodies in ventral midline and posterior base of ventral fin. Body transparent white, dark muzzle, five large ventral blotches and a midline dark chromatophores (Ref. 37473).
