Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Cichlinae
Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 7 - 8; dH range: 9 - 20
Distribution:  Central America: San Juan ichthyological province of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Discovered in 1991 in the hot spring at Heviz (Balaton, Hungary) where it is established (Ref. 59043).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits lakes and swampy areas with muddy bottoms. Feeds on considerable ooze, detritus and filaments of algae (Ref. 36880). Forms pairs; both sexes territorial. Tolerant of high temperatures and able to survive in small water bodies during dry periods. (Ref. 59043).
