Family:  Ophidiidae (Cusk-eels), subfamily: Neobythitinae
Max. size:  14.9 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 60 - 230 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 89-98; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 75-81. Dorsal fin gray with about 10 pale spots and a distinct blackish spot (Ref. 13608).
Biology:  Common species (Ref. 34024) found to feed on crustaceans (Ref. 32505). Oviparous, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass (Ref. 205).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 29 January 2013 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
