Max. size:  16.52 cm SL (female)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine
Distribution:  Equatorial Atlantic: Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 10-10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-15; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-7; Vertebrae: 26-26. This species is distinguished from its only Atlantic congener (Odontanthias hensleyi) by the following characters: pectoral-fin rays 20; total gill rakers on first arch 39; a vomerine tooth patch with a posterior prolongation; pelvic fin does not reach base of last anal-fin ray; dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins are scaleless. Colour of dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins mostly dark red (Ref. 109715).
Biology:  The holotype's stomach was examined and found to be empty, with no trace of biological material and the gonads were analyzed macroscopically, indicating it to be an immature female (Ref. 109715).
