Family:  Percidae (Perches), subfamily: Etheostomatinae
Max. size:  7.8 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 3 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Hudson Bay basin in Ontario and Manitoba in Canada, and North Dakota south in Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins to Louisiana in the USA; Gulf drainages from Mobile Bay in Alabama to Neches River in Texas, USA; isolated population in San Antonio Bay drainage in Texas.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabit rocky riffles of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Adults usually occur in deep swift riffles while young in shallow riffles and runs (Ref. 5723).
