Family:  Lutjanidae (Snappers), subfamily: Lutjaninae
Max. size:  50 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 20 - 150 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: Laccadive Islands to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-13; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-9. Description: Dorsal red, ventral pinkish white; fins red; caudal peduncle spot pale (Ref. 6177). Intensity or shade of red could change quickly. Dorsal scale rows oblique extending to caudal peduncle horizontally (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Often form schools (Ref. 90102). Inhabit reefs and rocky bottoms. They feed on benthic and planktonic invertebrates and possibly small fishes. Marketed fresh or dried-salted.
