Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 5 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Lahontan and other interior basins in northern Nevada and northern California, USA including Humboldt, Walker, Carson, Truckee, Susan, Quinn and Reese River systems; Walker, Tahoe and Pyramid Lakes. Introduced elsewhere, including upper Sacramento River systems in California.
Diagnosis:  Distinguished from a similar species Richardsonius balteatus by having less anal rays (8-9, rarely 10), longer snout, more slender body and less slender caudal peduncle (Ref. 86798).
Biology:  Occurs in margin of lakes and all types of stream habitats but usually in pools and slow runs (Ref. 86798).
