Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Max. size:  56 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 3,850.0 g
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: upper Zambezi River, Zambia and Okavango drainage in Botswana and Namibia (Ref. 27496). Also reported from the Zambezi and Okavango in Angola (Ref. 120641).
Diagnosis:  Description: deep-bodied; mouth large; frontal profile moderately steep; caudal fin rounded (Ref. 52307). Coloration: body olive brown, ventral regions paler and often a bit silvery; dark dot at center of most body scales; several to many reddish maculae in caudal fin and in soft dorsal and anal fins, these fins also with yellow margins; males much more intensely colored than females and have well-developed, reddish, ocellated egg spots (Ref. 52307).
Biology:  Predatory species, most active during twilight and at night (Ref. 52307). Feeds primarily on nocturnal mormyrid and schilbeid fishes (Ref. 27496). Breeding takes place at the beginning of summer (Ref. 52307).
