Diagnostic characters: distinguished from other hexagrammids by: pointed snout, protruding lower jaw; large terminal mouth with gape directed upward; longer gut; distribution of pigment on tail. Pigment: head and snout; laterally on surface of gut; along dorsal midline and ventrolateral body; rather uniformly pigmented (flexion). Sequence of fin development: caudal and pectorals, 2nd dorsal (rays) and anal, 1st dorsal (spines), pelvics.
