Description |
Headwaters in the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya and drains to the Indian Ocean. Heads northeasterly from Aberdare Range, plunges over the Kitaru (Seven Forks) Falls (134m) into semidesert middle course. Veers south and opens into a wide valley then meanders through a floodplain. Empties at Formosa Bay, Kipini (former outlet at 32 km southwest). Navigable by small craft up to 240 km upstream. Upper catchment (Sasumua Dam) provides Nairobi with water. Hydroelectric project at Kindaruma, Seven Forks. Irrigation project at Embu provides irrigation water. |
