Etymology: Synodontis: Greek, syn, symphysis = grown together + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335);  woleuensis: The specific name is in reference to the Woleu River of Gabon, the type locality for this new species (Ref. 78430).

Espinas dorsales (total): 2; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 7; Espinas anales 1-3; Radios blandos anales: 8 - 9; Vértebra: 34 - 36. This species has well-developed serrations on the anterior margin of the dorsal spine and a distinctive pigmentation pattern: a variable pattern and number of light, cream colored spots distributed over a largely uniform dark brown upper body and over a more lightly pigmented ventral surface, and a narrow, depigmented, curved band along the entireanterior margin of the caudal fin (Ref. 78430).
