Known from the Missouri River basin in Montana and Wyoming to Illinois; and Mississippi River from mouth of Missouri River to Louisiana (Ref. 86798). Fairly common in middle Missouri River; rare elsewhere (Ref. 86798). This species is considered endangered and treated as a Species of Special Concern in Tennessee (Ref. 10294).

Status of threat: vulnerable; status same as 1989. Criteria: 1 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
