	NAFO Convention

TAKING into account the work of the third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in the field of fisheries;

The Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries, signed on 24 October 1978 in Ottawa, came into force on 1 January 1979.

DESIRING to promote the conservation and optimum utilization of the fishery resources of the Northwest Atlantic area within a framework appropriate to the regime of extended Coastal State jurisdiction over fisheries, and accordingly to encourage international cooperation and consultation with respect to these resources:

     The Contracting Parties agree to establish and maintain an international organization whose object shall be to
     contribute to the optimum utilization, rational management and conservation of the fishery resources of the
     Convention Area. This organization shall be known as the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization.

The Organization consists of the following constituent bodies:

   1.General Council; 
   2.Scientific Council; 
   3.Fisheries Commission; and 
   4.Secretariat.

As at September 1997, the Organization has 17 Contracting Parties.

This Convention established the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (ICNAF). [24 Oct 1978] Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries [Entered into force 01 Jan 1979). This Convention established the NAFO, which was founded in 1978, following extension of Canada's jurisdiction to 200 miles.
