Definition of Term

Kingdom Plantae
(English) Multicellular, eukaryotic organisms. Plants have a relatively complex body form, usually obtaining nourishment by photosynthesis. Photosynthetic enzymes are found in membrane-bound plastids (e.g. chloroplasts) and produce oxygen as their end product. Plants have cellulose cell walls, often with a large, permanent cell vacuole providing support. Sexual reproduction involves the production of haploid spores and subsequently haploid gametes (these may be motile in aquatic forms) with the development of a diploid embryo. All plants are multicellular. Plants are primarily adapted for life on land and show an alternation of generations (a gamete-producing stage and spore-producing stage).
