Definition of Term

dentary
(English) The anterior and largest of the bones making up the lower jaw; the anterior and principal bone of the lower jaw and the one by which teeth, when present, are borne, also: the anterior, paired, dermal bone in the lower jaw. Usually the only tooth-bearing bone in the mandible, the two halves have a V-shape and meet at the jaw tip or mandibular symphysis. Posteriorly it has a coronoid process directed dorsally and a ventral process bearing the mandibular sensory canal on its outer face. (See also: anterior, maxilla, mandible)
