Definition of Term

dorsal and anal fin ray counts
(English) In spiny-rayed fishes, all spines of the dorsal and anal fins are counted, regardless of their size. For soft rays, the small rays at the origins of these fins are not included in counts for minnows and suckers because they are difficult to discern. Also, in some groups the posterior (last) two small soft rays are often closer together than the others and usually share a common base element; these two rays are conventionally counted as one. (See also: fin element counts, dorsal fin, anal fin)
(See also: fin element counts, dorsal fin, anal fin)
