Definition of Term

outgroup
(English) An outgroup is any group in a phylogenetic analysis that is not included in the group under study (= ingroup). Outgroups are used for comparative purposes. Normally, the most informative outgroup is the actual sister group. (See also: tree, ingroup, sister group)
extra-groupe
(French) Un extra-groupe est toute groupe dans une analyse phylogénétique qui n'est pas incluse dans la groupe sous étude (= tribu). Les extra-groupes sont utilisés pour les buts comparatifs. Normalement, l'extra-groupe le plus instructif est la groupe-soeur réelle. (See also: tree, ingroup, sister group)
