pseudotympanum
(English) A translucent, triangular area in the humeral region on the side behind the gill cover where the muscles are missing and the anterior part of the gas bladder is directly in contact with the skin, which is hypothesised to improve the hearing in many very young characoids and persists in some adults, notably the Cheirodontidae.
