Definition of Term

striated rays
(English) Most soft rays are segmented, that is, they have crossbands or striations. Most fishes have unstriated rays along the anterior part of the dorsal and ventral edges (leading edges) of the caudal fin. In some fishes such as the gobies the numbers of striated vs non-striated soft rays help with identification. (See also: striate, ray, anterior)
