Definition of Term

bioconcentration factor (BCF)
(English) A measure of the degree to which a compound (commonly a xenobiotic), present in an aquatic environment, is accumulated in the biomass of organisms (e.g. algae) living in that environment. BCF = Co(subscript)/Cw(subscript) where Co = concentration of the compound in the organisms, and Cw = concentration of the compound in the water.
