Definition of Term

distinctiveness
(English) In contrast to richness and rarity, distinctiveness is a criterion used to assess the degree of genetical separation of a given species from other species. For example, when comparing areas for conservation purposes, endemic species should receive higher conservation priority because they are distinct in that they are found nowhere else in the world. (See also: endemic, rarity, richness)
(See also: endemic, rarity, richness)
