Definition of Term

initial-phase
(English) In sequentially hermaphroditic species, the color pattern characteristic of smaller sexually mature individuals. Usually, though not always, less gaudy and complex than the terminal-phase pattern developed in most cases following sex change. (See also: sequential hermaphrodite, terminal-phase male)
