Golden-red dorsally, paler below. Spine stout, pungent and venomous. Preopercular angle 105° (95°); strong, overlapping scales cover cheeks; midline of thorax scaled, not pelvic ridges. Anterior encircled by a flattened flange or rim, broader posteriorly.
