Etymology: Tocantinsia: Taken from Brasilian river Tocantins (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Antenor Pires was a taxidermist and an assistant at the Rondon Commission. He was a member of the Paranatinga River expedition (1914–1915) during which the holotype was collected. He was a friend of the author, Miranda Ribeiro. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
