Short description Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics

Diagnosed from its congeners in Black Sea basin by having the following characters: predorsal scales with longitudinal epithelial crests; dorsal fin with 7½ branched rays; anal fin with 6½ branched rays; 37-41 + 2 scales on lateral line; 14-16 scale rows around caudal peduncle; dorsal fin situated behind middle of body, predorsal length greater than postdorsal length; anus midway between pelvic and anal origins or slightly closer to anal origin than to pelvic origin; snout shorter than or equal to postorbital distance (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits bottom of moderately flowing large and medium size lowland rivers, preferring sand bottom. Also found in lake. Juvenile may occur in backwaters. Active at night, feeding on insect larvae and other large benthic invertebrates. Populations most likely have declined due to construction of large reservoirs on Danube in 20th century and have stabilized at a moderate level since (Ref. 59043).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00603 (0.00290 - 0.01252), b=3.12 (2.95 - 3.29), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.4   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
