Etymology: Placidochromis: Latin, placidus = of peaceful or tranquile appearance + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).

Africa: Occurs in the south end of Lake Malawi, Shire River and Lake Malombe.

Seemingly restricted to the beds of the rootless Ceratophyllum and Najas found at a depth of about 10 m. Probably feeds from the sediment that has accumulated among the weeds. Its long gut may indicate that the species is an herbivore (Ref. 5595).
