Etymology: Pictichromis: Name from Latin pictus meaning painted or colored, and Greek Chromis, a genus of pomacentrid, used as the stem for other fish genera; alludes to the bright live colorations of the included species (Ref. 81967).

Found in sheltered reefs with rich coral growth (Ref. 48635). Small groups are found among coral or rocks. Minimum depth reported from Ref. 27115. In aquarium settings, this species behaves aggressively towards other fishes (Ref. 125723).

In the aquarium, mature male swims near a female to start courtship. After a while, the female is lured into the breeding cave arranged by the male (Ref. 125723).
