Africa: Niger, Benue, Volta and Senegal rivers (Ref. 2801, 81282), also reported from Cross River but, so far, never found in other coastal basins in West Africa (Ref. 81282, 81639). Also in Lake Chad system (Ref. 2801, 81282, 81639), Nile basin (Ref. 28714), Lake Albert (Ref. 4903) and Lake Turkana basin (Ref. 2801, 52331).

Scale formula 5.5-6.5/32-40/3.5(4.5); 12 scales around caudal peduncle; 9-12 anal-fin branched rays (Ref. 2940, 81282, 81639). 8-9 dorsal-fin branched rays; sides plain or with irregular markings; back dark (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Affinities: L. guineensis (no. of scales higher).
