Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); flavatra: Named for the contrasting dark and light color pattern in living individuals, from the Latin adjectives flavus, yellow, and ater, black.

A small species of Garra, with shallow rostral furrow and elevated anterior margin of snout in adults, rostral lobe present, proboscis absent, conical tubercles on rostral lobe and along anterior margin of snout, scaled predorsal region, chest and abdomen, two pairs of barbels, lateral line scales 27-29 (usually 28), circumpeduncular scale rows 16.
