Dorsal spines (total): 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 10; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 5 - 6; Vertebrae: 24. This species is characterized by the following: 18-20 pectoral fin rays with the dorsalmost unbranched rays abruptly longer than the ventralmost branched rays; snout elongated 13-15% SL; dorsal spines relatively elongated; body with distinct broad, orange or orange red vertical bars that extend onto the fins; short nasal spines, bifid or absent in some specimens; suborbital ridge with spines extended laterally to form a shelf; vertical scale rows 43-51 (Ref. 83997).
Collected and observed from rocky reefs, often in association with sponges, upon the platform and along the margins of the Galápagos archipelago at 200-412 m; photographed at 160-300 m (Ref. 83997).
