Etymology: Hyphessobrycon: Greek, hyphesson, -on, -on = a little smaller + Greek, bryko = to bite (Ref. 45335).

In the group callistus following Hoedeman (1954) and Géry (1961, 1978); in the "rosy-tetra" clade following Weitzman and Palmer (1997) (Ref. 75699).

A medium-size species in Hyphessobrycon. Body height: 34-38% SL. Head length: 22-25% SL. A black elongated triangular blotch just behind gill slit less long than the pectoral fin. Top of dorsal fin black with red tip. Adipose fin red. Body translucid.
