Etymology: Trimma: Greek, trimma, -atos = something crushed (Ref. 45335); yanagitai: Named for Mr. Mitsuhiko Yanagita, who provided the holotype.
Eponymy: Mitsuhiko Yanagita is a professional diver who works at NASO Dive at Ito, Shizuoka, Japan. He used to be on the staff of Izu Oceanic Park, Diving Center. He helped the authors collect and provided the type. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species differs from its congeners in having the following characters; its large size (largest 3.68 cm SL); predorsal scales 10-12; second spine of first dorsal fin elongate (not filamentous) or not elongate; pectoral fin branched, middle 6-11 rays; fifth pelvic-fin ray unbranched or branched, 49-57% of fourth ray in length; connecting membrane absent between innermost pelvic-fin rays; presence of a deep interorbital trough, no postorbital trough; pectoral fin rays 18-19; longitudinal scales 24; cheek and opercular scales; ground color of head and body grayish brown dorsally, dull yellow to pale ventrally; body when fresh with seven grayish lavender saddles with broad pale pink margins (Ref. 75857).
