Etymology: Coris: Greek, kore, -es = pupil and also with themenaing of "maid" (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Andreas Fleming Stewart Sandager was a New Zealand lighthouse keeper and amateur naturalist who collected the holotype. At that time, ‘Sandager’ was sometimes spelt as ‘Sandeyer’, thus explaining the binomial. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Feeds mainly on small benthic invertebrates like ophiuroids, chitons, amphipods, and small gastropods. Adults feed by rummaging on the bottom while juveniles and sub-adults are facultative cleaner symbionts and pick parasites from the bodies of other fish. They also feed on benthic organisms (Ref. 26966).
