Etymology: Cypselurus: Greek, kypselos, ou = swift + Greek,oura = tail (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Masaji Hirai of the Manazuru Branch of Tokaiku Suisan Kenkujo (Kanakawa Prefecture, Japan) had been collecting fishes for Abe for some years. He collected a ‘fine specimen of the young’ of this species (1952). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
