Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); histrio: histrio meaning harlequin, referring to the mask-like facial pigmentation (Ref. 10294).

In Red and Arkansas drainages west to Oklahoma and Texas; in Wabash River drainage and Green River system in USA.
