Diagnosed from its congeners in Black Sea basin by the possession of the following characters: dorsal fin with 7½ branched rays; anal fin with 6½ branched rays; anus midway between pelvic and anal origins; absence of scales between pectoral bases; longitudinal epithelial crests on predorsal scales restricted to posterior scale margin (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits main course of large rivers and main tributaries, in relatively deep water, with sand bottom and near riffles. Attains up to about 10 cm SL (Ref. 59043).
