Etymology: Chaetostoma: Greek, chaite = hair + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: W Fischer, described by Steindachner as a ‘dear friend’, sent a collection of river fishes from Panama which included the holotype of this species. We have not been able to identify Fischer further. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
