Etymology: Tachysurus: Greek, tachys, -eia, y = quick + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Ho Ting Chieh was a Chinese ichthyologist and geneticist at Wuhan University. He collected the holotype and presented it, along with other Chinese fishes, to MNHN, Paris. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
