This species is placed in the genus Pundamilia Seehausen & Lippitsch, 1998 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Sep. 2011: Ref. 88002). We keep all the lacustrine and riverine "Haplochromine" species of the Lake Victoria catchment in the genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf, 1888 following Van Oijen et al. (1996: Ref. 12750), until a new complete taxonomic revision is published.

A cryptically, most likely solitarily living species. Inhabits moderately steep and steep rocky shores at depths between 2 and at least 10 m. On moderately steep slopes it is usually encountered somewhat offshore. On steep slopes it occurs immediately inshore among boulders and in deep rock pools, sometimes at less than 2 m depth. Feeds on insect larvae, epilithic sponges, ostracods, plankton, detritus and snails.
