Etymology: Ilyodon: Greek, ilyos, -ou = cave + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Maria Teresa Cortés was a Mexican ichthyologist. The etymology says: “This species is named after Maria Teresa Cortés, who played an important role in the developement of the Mexican Ichthyology.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 15 - 18; Anal soft rays: 11 - 13. 52 to 60 scales in a longitudinal series; jaw with two irregular series of strongly implanted bifid teeth; the pores of the lateral line in the preorbital branch are wide and always in a straight line; the prezygapophyses of caudal peduncle vertebrae are short and do not touch the adjacent postzygapophyses (Ref. 40197).
