Etymology: Sciaenochromis: Greek, skiaina, skion = a fish, red mullet + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); psammophilus: From the Greek psammos meaning sand and philos meaning loving - in reference to its normal habitat, over sandy substrate (Ref. 40899).

خارهاي باله پشتي (کل) : 15 - 16; شعاع نرم باله پشتي (کل) : 8 - 10; خارهاي باله مخرجي: 3; شعاع نرم باله مخرجي: 8 - 9. Melanin pattern showing 9-11 vertical bars; dorsal head profile convex; lower head profile straight and almost horizontal (Ref. 40899).
Found in sandy areas (Ref. 40899). Feeds on small cichlids, possibly small invertebrates as well (Ref. 40899). Breeding males protect an area of about 2 meters in diameter with a nest located at its center (Ref. 40899).
