Etymology: Aphyosemion: Greek, aphye, -es, sardine, anchovy + Greek, semeion = mark, signal (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Peter J Tirbak (1932–2019) was a killifish hobbyist in Palo Alto, California. He was born in China to Russian refugees from the Bolshevik revolution. He was one of the discoverers of the species when in Gabon collecting fish for his aquariums. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
