Etymology: Cyprinella: Latin, cyprinus = carp (Ref. 45335);  proserpina: Cyprinella meaning small carp, and proserpina, latinized form of Persephone (queen of the infernal regions, possibly in reference to the type locality of the Devils River) (Ref. 79012).
