Etymology: Kryptopterus: Greek, kryptos = hidden + Greek, pteron = wing. Fin (Ref. 45335); piperatus: Named from the Latin adjective 'piperatus', meaning peppered, in reference to the scattered black spots on the flanks.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 2 - 3; Anal soft rays: 49 - 53; Vertebrae: 44 - 45. Distinguished from all other species of Kryptopterus by the following unique combination of characters: body with pale brown coloration with scattered black spots on flanks; head width 11.4-12.0% SL; body depth at anus 22.3-24.3% SL; eye diameter 20.3-25.3% HL; maxillary barbels extending to anal origin; anal fin with 49-53 rays; and gill rakers 16-17 (Ref. 52489).
The type locality is a small river under primary forest cover and with a moderate current, turbid water and with many fallen trees and a muddy substrate. Also found in areas with clear water and substrate consisting of sand and gravel (Ref. 52489).
