Etymology: Callogobius: Greek, kalos, kallos = beautiful + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); sheni: Named for Prof. Shieh-Chieh Shen, a senior ichthyologist, for his great contribution to ichthyology in Taiwan.

Diagnosed from other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: absence of posterior oculoscapular and preopercular canals; presence of five blackish brown cross bands on pale white body; presence of a large blackish brown blotch on caudal and pectoral fins; dorsal fin rays VI-I, 9; anal fin rays I, 7; pectoral fin rays 18; longitudinal scale rows 27-28; predorsal scale rows 9-10; vertebrae 26 (Ref. 76778).
