This species is distinguished by the following characters: D 64, A 59, P 23-25, C 8; vertebrae 73 (12-61); pectoral radials 4 (3+1); simple and uniserial teeth except near jaw symphysis; gill opening shorter than pupil diameter; undeveloped opercular flap; head 16% SL; eye 28% of head length (HL); one symphyseal mandibular pore; pectoral fin with notch rays not rudimentary; interneural of the first dorsal-fin ray between neural spine 6 and 7; anus behind vertical through gill opening; mandible to anus distance almost equal to the length of anus to anal-fin origin; body color dark black-brown, with bluish tint, peritoneum black (Ref. 79982).
