Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Barbara Williams is a scientific illustrator including such books as Greenwood’s Fishes of Uganda (1958). The etymology says: “Named in honour of Mrs. Barbara Williams, whose drawings illustrate this and others of my papers.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Found in shallow, exposed sandy beaches, over a hard substrate situated a short distance off-shore near the water lily zone fringing a papyrus swamp (Ref. 4983). The gut of the specimens which were examined contained recently fertilized cichlid ova (Ref. 558).
