Etymology: Neofundulus: Greek, neos = new + Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" (Ref. 45335); rubrofasciatus: Name from the Latin rubrofasciatus, meaning with red stripes, in reference to the red stripes on the caudal peduncle and anal-fin base in males.
